Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Devil May Cry 5 — editions, platforms, DLC, and tips for getting started.

Editions & Platforms

There are three main versions: the Standard Edition (2019), the Deluxe Edition (includes extra Devil Breakers, alternate costumes, and classic battle music), and the Special Edition (2020, next-gen consoles only — includes Vergil, Turbo Mode, Legendary Dark Knight mode, and ray tracing). The Vergil DLC can also be purchased separately for $4.99 on all platforms for the Standard/Deluxe editions.

Devil May Cry 5 is available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam). The Special Edition is exclusive to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The base game + Vergil DLC on PS4/Xbox One/PC provides most of the same content, minus Turbo Mode, Legendary Dark Knight, and ray tracing.

Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition was added to Xbox Game Pass. Availability may change — check the current Game Pass library for the latest status.

Special Edition adds: Vergil as a playable character (included, not DLC), Turbo Mode (20% game speed increase), Legendary Dark Knight Mode (extreme enemy density), ray tracing support, and 120 FPS mode on supported hardware. Story content is identical.

Getting Started

No, but it helps. DMC5 is the direct sequel to DMC4 and resolves plot threads from DMC3 and DMC1. The game provides a brief "History of DMC" video in the menus, but for full context, we recommend at least watching story recaps of DMC3, DMC1, and DMC4 (in that order — that's the chronological sequence). Our Story & Lore page covers the complete timeline.

The game assigns characters per mission, so you don't choose freely in story mode. Nero is the most accessible (Missions 1–8), V is unique but simpler in execution (Missions 3–5, 9), and Dante is the most complex (Missions 10+). By the time you reach Dante's missions, you'll have enough experience. For Bloody Palace, Vergil (DLC) is the easiest to clear with thanks to Judgement Cut End.

Devil Hunter (Normal) is recommended for most players. Human is very easy and doesn't showcase the combat system well. If you're a veteran of action games or DMC, you can start on Devil Hunter and unlock Son of Sparda, where the real challenge begins.

A first playthrough on Devil Hunter takes roughly 10–15 hours. Completionists (all S-ranks, all difficulties, all Secret Missions, Bloody Palace clears with all characters) can easily spend 60–100+ hours.

Buy skills. Red Orbs are plentiful, especially if you replay missions. Priority skills: for Nero, buy Exceed 3 and Table Hopper; for Dante, buy all Style abilities and Swordmaster moves; for V, buy all familiar upgrades early. Blue Orbs (health) and Purple Orbs (DT gauge) from the shop are overpriced — find the fragments in levels instead.

Gameplay & Content

In the Special Edition, Vergil is available from the start. In the Standard/Deluxe Edition, purchase the Vergil DLC ($4.99) from your platform's store. Once installed, select Vergil from the main menu.

A 101-floor survival mode where you fight increasingly difficult waves of enemies and bosses under a time limit. It was added as a free post-launch update. Bloody Palace can be played with any character, including Vergil. It's the primary endgame content and the best place to test mastery.

Yes. After completing the story, you can replay any mission from the menu with your current upgrades and skills. This is essential for finding missed collectibles, earning S-ranks, and practicing on higher difficulties.

Unlocked by completing Dante Must Die difficulty. Super Costumes give infinite Devil Trigger gauge, making you extremely powerful. Using them disables S-rank eligibility for mission scores, but they're great for fun and farming.

DMC5 has a unique asynchronous feature called the Cameo System. In certain missions where characters' paths cross, you'll see another player's character fighting in real-time in the background. You can rate their style at the end of the mission. There's also The Void training mode for solo practice.

Dante's Dr. Faust hat is the most efficient farming tool. Equip it in Mission 13 or Bloody Palace and use Red Hot Night on dense enemy groups — it costs orbs but the return is massive. Mission 13 with Dante is the most popular farming route. Alternatively, replay early missions on Human difficulty for fast completions.

Technical & PC

Minimum: Intel Core i5-4460 / AMD FX-6300, 8 GB RAM, GTX 760 / R7 260x, 35 GB storage. Recommended: Intel Core i7-3770 / AMD FX-9590, 8 GB RAM, GTX 1060 / RX 480, 35 GB storage. The game runs on the RE Engine and is exceptionally well-optimized — even modest hardware can achieve 60 FPS at 1080p.

Natively, DMC5 supports 21:9 ultrawide. However, cutscenes are pillarboxed to 16:9. Community mods exist to extend cutscene FOV.

DMC5 has an active modding community despite no official mod tools. Popular mods include custom costumes, moveset edits, difficulty tweaks, and a Co-op Trainer that enables real-time local co-op. Mods are typically installed via the Fluffy Mod Manager. Note that mods can interfere with online features.
